New Cross Hospital – UK (Recurring Case)

Hanwha Techwin‘s Wisenet cameras provide safe monitoring solutions for UK New Cross Hospital

“It is essential during this challenging time that we are able to continue to provide a secure and safe working environment for all our heroic colleagues who are so compassionately caring for all of our patients and service users during these challenging times. I have been impressed with how quickly various companies within the electronic security supply chain have been able to come together and use their combined expertise to provide us with an effective and cost-effective solution.”

♦ Challenge

New Cross Hospital, run by the Royal Wolverhampton NHS (National Health Service) Trust, is located in the Health Town district of West Midlands, England. The hospital was originally built around 1900 as a workhouse, turned into a modern hospital in 1970 and became the New Cross Hospital in 1994. Its Heart and Lung Center opened in 2004 as United Kingdom’s first purpose-built specialist heart center and further provides various medical services including emergency, maternity and neonatal intensive care.

Some hospitals have needed to quickly erect portable buildings to expand their capacity, to meet the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Correspondingly, New Cross Hospital required to take new steps to provide safe environments for patients, visitors, and staff by enhancing security and surveillance, as the situation of the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to develop rapidly. The New Cross Hospital provides 700 beds and employs near 9500 staff and is the largest teaching hospital in the Black Country. This in turn has required to expand the scope of CCTV systems so that control room operators can monitor and react to any suspicious activity in the vicinity of new buildings. However, the installation of a 4K camera over 300 meters from the hospital’s control room initially seemed daunting – in terms of cost placing the network cabling necessary to send high definition images from IP cameras.

JKE Security has had a long-term working relationship with the Trust. Dan Mather, director of JKE Derby said: “Apart from the cost of the engineering work and the disruption caused by installing the new cabling, it would also have taken several days to achieve. We clearly needed to find a much simpler and cost-effective solution which would enable our clients to take full advantage of the superb quality images captured by 4K cameras and, if necessary, pass evidence of any wrongdoing to police.”

♦ Solution

Dan Mather sought advice from the electronic security product distributor Smart R Distribution based in Haverhill. They were able to offer him an assurance that their own brand 602POE-2P single port PoE Ethernet Extender would be able to reliably support a new 4K Wisenet PNP-9200RH dome camera, which Dan had sourced from EET, an authorized Hanwha Tecwhin Europe distribution partner, by facilitating the transmission of the IP images over the hospital’s existing coaxial cabling.

The Wisenet PNP-9200RH dome camera, installed at New Cross Hospital, features 20x optical zoom lens and IR with viewable length up to 656ft. One of the significant benefits of Hanwha Techwin’s Wisenet camera is that it captures 4K high quality images anytime, anywhere. Additionally, Endless 360° pan rotation and 190° tilt control, advanced Auto Tracking functions make its monitoring more powerful, mechanical anti-vibration. The PNP-9200RH, which is IP66 and IK10 rated for vandal-resistance and outdoor use in the harshest environments, utilizes Progressive Scan technology to provide sharp edges on moving subjects and vehicles. It shares many of the innovative, practical features with other models in the premium Wisenet P series. These include, bi-directional audio support, privacy masking, defog and an SD card slot to ensure that video is automatically recorded in the event of network disruption.

The Smart R 602POE-2P single port PoE Ethernet Extender can transmit data over any two-wire cable, and with the ability to handle bandwidth of up to 200Mbps, it is more than capable of coping with the transmission demands of the Wisenet 4K camera.

♦ Result

Dan Mather added: “Although we did not source the camera from Smart R, it could not have been easier to connect it to the Ethernet Extender. It was truly a case of plug and play, with both devices installed, configured and working within half a day!”

Paul Smith, Head of Security and Car Parking for the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust said: “It is essential during this challenging time that we are able to continue to provide a secure and safe working environment for all our heroic colleagues who are so compassionately caring for people who have contracted COVID-19. I have been impressed with how quickly various companies within the electronic security supply chain have been able to come together and use their combined expertise to provide us with an effective and cost-effective solution.”
